in one of the most picturesque intermountain depressions in Romania, on the Jiu River, between the Retezat Mountains and Sebes Mountains in the north, Valcan and Parang Mountains in the south, in the southwestern part of Romania, more precisely in Transylvania, at the southern extremity of Hunedoara County.
The sedimentary complex of the depression consists of deposits belonging to the Upper Cretaceous, Paleogenic, Neogen and Quaternary, and morphologically, the margin of the depression is very fragmented by deep and narrow valleys.
The depression has a triangular shape, and it is crossed by Jiu de Vest and Jiu de Est, and communicates only through two places with the other areas of the country, through the Jiu Gorge and the Banita-Merisor Pass, which is considered the most closed depression in the country.
Please enjoy some wonderful photographs from Jiu Valley and get in touch.
